Call for Affinity Groups at Botany 2022

For the past several years, our botany community with logistic support from BSA and members of the BSA DEI committee has come together to organize affinity group social events at the annual Botany conference, including a Black, Indigenous, and People of Color mixer, an Asian/Asian-American/Pacific Islander Mixer, a Disabled and Allies mixer and an LGBTQ+ mixer.

This year, BSA is offering financial support to enable conference attendees to host affinity group meet-ups at the Botany 2022 conference in Alaska.  We are very excited to be able to hold these events in person this year and are looking for individuals or teams who are interested in hosting these events.  The Botany Conference organizer and the BSA DEI committee are excited to work with you to create the space you envision to connect with your community.

If you are interested in organizing an affinity group meet-up please fill out this google form by June 24.  The form will ask you about:

  • Intended Audience
  • Format (mixer; coffee; lunch)
  • Preferred dates/times

You may also email Sarah Sims (the BSA Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Outreach Programs Coordinator) at with your interest or with any questions.

Shortly after receiving your interest form, Sarah will contact you to work out details and connect you with other attendees/members who might also be interested in organizing a similar group meet-up.

Please note:

  • Locations, dates, and times for meet-ups/socials are extremely limited, and we will need to work with the conference director and program director as well as the venue to confirm availability.
  • An LGBTQ and Friends Mixer is already planned for July 26th, 5:30-6:30 pm.
