Address of the BSA President-Elect - Michael Donoghue

Donoghue, Michael [1].

The function and future of 'clade biology'.

I consider those who devote themselves to achieving a deep understanding of a particular clade — approaching it from multiple different angles — to be clade biologists. Clade biology is comparable to, for example, cell biology, organismal biology, and population biology, only in this case the objects of study are clades. In my mind clade biology is close to systematics, but with a remit that extends beyond the usual species delimitation, description, relationships, classification, etc. It also is close to phylogenetic biology, but with an emphasis on the in-depth analysis of a particular clade, as opposed to comparative phylogenetic studies focused on a given process or suite of characters. My aim is to explore the peculiar value of this clade biology approach. How can integrative studies of clades advance our understanding of evolution and ecology, but also of organismal structure and function? Not surprisingly, I will argue that the future of clade biology is bright!
