Anti-allergic and antioxidant activities and Total Phenolics Content of Ya-Ta-KAE-KAN formula.

Ya-Ta-KAE-KAN formula, including Momordica charantia L. And Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.), was discovered in Thai Pharmacy scripture. It has been used to treat itching or pruritus. This research aimed to investigate anti-allergic and antioxidant activities and total phenolics content of the 95% ethanol and water extracts of Ya-Ta-KAE-KAN formula using inhibitory effects on the release of β-hexosaminidase assay for anti-allergic activity, ABTS radical cation decolorization assay for antioxidant activity, and Folin-Ciocalteu medthod for total phenolics content. The results showed that 95% ethanol extract exhibited anti-allergic and antioxidant activities. Moreover, 95% ethanol extract displayed high total phenolics content. We concluded that Ya-Ta-KAE-KAN formula revealed anti-allergic activity and it was related with the ethnomedical use as itching or pruritus drug in Thai traditional medicine.
