Light stress and cold effects on Arabidopsis ecotypes from diverse elevational and climactic origins.

Plants growing at high elevations are faced with several environmental challenges, including high light levels and colder temperatures. We investigated the impact of light stress on 117 ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana from diverse backgrounds to better understand responses and adaptations to light stress at high elevations where cold growth conditions are often coupled with light stress. Plants were grown under high and low light treatments in a growth chamber programmed to simulate a colder climate at high elevation. Total above ground fresh biomass was harvested and measured at the rosette stage prior to flowering, and antioxidant activity was quantified across ecotypes. Prior to harvest, leaf color was analyzed in all plants. Plants under light stress had higher antioxidant activity and greater leaf magenta color at the rosette stage relative to plants grown under low light conditions. Ecotypes from higher elevations had greater total above ground biomass at the rosette stage, but had similar antioxidant activity in both light treatments relative to ecotypes from lower elevations.
