Hybridization and evolution in sympatric populations in Goodyera (Orchidaceae).

Goodyerais a relatively small genus in Orchidaceae with about 40 species distributed worldwide. It is characterized by creeping rhizomes, rosette leaves often with marked lines, and single anthers with two sectile pollinia. In Korea, six species (G. schlechtendaliana, G. biflora, G. repens, G. rosulacea, G. maximowicziana, and G. velutina) and one hybrid, G. x tamnaensis, are distributed. All of these species except for G. rosulaceaoccur on Jejudo Island, with some growing together at one site, forming sympatric populations. As part of a comprehensive systematic study of Goodyera, we located sympatric populations of G. maximowiczianaand G. velutinaon Jejudo Island. To understand the morphological variation patterns between the species, we examined the diagnostic characters of G. velutinaand G. maximowicziana, in this case the stem color, leaf venation, color, margin, and flower color in 53 individuals of six species. We found that at least three intermediate forms occurred in sympatric populations of G. velutinaand G. maximowiczianaon Jejudo Island, suggesting that hybridization played a role in generating morphological diversity within the populations. A phylogenetic analysis using both nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequences support that hybridization events are associated with G. velutinaand G. maximowicziana.
