Anatomy and Morphology

Systematic Significance of Pollen Morphological Variation in Tribe Lithospermeae (Boraginaceae).

Variation in pollen grain characters in Boraginaceae has been noted since the 1950s, and used to evaluate tribal relationships. Pollen morphology of 21 genera of tribe Lithospermeae is described and illustrated using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Pollen grains in Lithospermeae are prolate, sub-prolate and occasionally spheroidal-oblate in shape. Exine ornamentation of pollen grains varies from psilate, microechinate-perforate in Onosma (3 species); microreticulate-perforate in Lobostemon (3 species) and Echiostachys; and fossulate- perforate in Cystostemon (2 species). The P/E ratio varied from 0.99 (Cystostemon ethiopicus) to 2.09 (Arnebia inconspicua).  The number of aperture range from 2 to 8 and five major pollen types, tricolporate, tetracolocpolate, stephanocolporate, hexacolporate and 3-syncolporate, are recognized by aperture types. Despite a wide variation, the taxa share a number of common features; the pollen grains are small monads and colporate. Pollen data support the sister relationships between Lobostemon + Echium + Echiostachys, between Ulugbekia + Lithospermum of a previously reported molecular phylogenetic analysis. The result shows wide diversity within genera in the shape of pollen, the number of apertures, polarity, ornamentation and confirm the eurypalinous character of the tribe. As a result, both quantitative and qualitative palynological characters of tribe Lithospermeae is most diverse and provide much valuable information for the identification and delimitation of the species and genera.
