Time to dig: the importance of underground storage organs in plant evolution

A comprehensive monograph was published for the genus Claytonia L. (Montiaceae) in 2006, but a lot has changed in just over 10 years since its publication. While it is perhaps too early to revise interpretations and publish a new monograph, a review of where we’ve come in terms of our knowledge of species diversity and sectional classification is essential to forward progress. Much of the data contributing to our understanding of biodiversity in the genus was previously based on highly variable morphological characters and genetic data preceding the availability of affordable genomic approaches. Here we demonstrate there is more than meets the eye in terms of named lineages of Claytonia by presenting new and published genomic data available for the tuberous perennials (sect. Claytonia) and some of their closest relatives. Insights regarding edaphic differentiation of these and other geophytic lineages is discussed as it pertains to parallel evolution in annual species of Claytonia (sect. Limnia) which are perhaps the most studied but also conceivably the most underestimated in terms of lineage diversity. We also discuss our use of iNaturalist as a community science platform for enhancing our understanding of diversity and distribution, engaging end-users of the taxonomy, and contributing to a modern taxonomic synthesis of the genus.
